When it comes to operating a forklift, there are a number of important safety aspects that all drivers should be instructed in before using the machine. Although they may be experienced, reminding them of these points is paramount for safety, both for themselves and others.

Pay attention

Although forklifts should be driven at a low speed, especially in areas of high traffic, the operator should be a step ahead at all times. This means constant scanning ahead of the machine, identifying potential hazards and acting to avoid them. Both hands should be on the controls during operation.

Inspection

All forklifts should be thoroughly inspected before use. This should happen each and every time, even between a morning and afternoon shift. The inspection should start with a check of all mechanical and moving parts, including the forklift section itself. If the forklift uses air-filled tires, pressures should be checked visually. All belts and pulleys should be inspected for wear. Finally, inspecting fluid levels is critical, this includes fuel level as well as hydraulic oils which are critical for forklift operation.

Communication

All forklift drivers should be able to communicate their intentions to staff on the floor. This is very important, especially in a busy warehouse. Communication can take the form of hand signals, using the forklift lights or any other system that everyone understands. When using a driver who has never worked on your floor before, explain your system to him and have him use it. When backing up, make sure the backup warning system is activated so all staff know the operators intentions. If it is the first time you are using a forklift on your floor, ask the driver to explain his favored communication method. On the floor, the forklift operator must be obeyed by other staff.
